The Recording Industries Music
Performance Trust Funds were created in 1948 under agreements between the
recording industry and the American Federation of Musicians, to present free,
live instrumental performances in connection with community, educational,
charitable and civic occasions. The funds are administered by an independent
trustee, Noel B. Berman, and based in New York City.
Approximately 25,000 individual programs are cosponsored annually by the
Funds, reaching an audience of 15 million people throughout the United States
and Canada each year. Long known as the largest single sponsor of live music in
the world, MPTF encourages co-sponsorship by nonpolitical organizations. Its
programs cover a vast range of musical styles: classical, country-western,
renaissance, rock, Dixieland, blues, jazz, Afro, Latin, and ethnic music. More
than 30% of the MPTF's available funds is earmarked each year for music
appreciation and education programs. The emphasis is always on quality and an
awareness of today's musical tastes.
